Understanding By Design:  Abstract Energy

Benchmarks

  1. Energy cannot be created or destroyed, energy can only be transformed.
  2. Explain examples of renewable energy.
  3. Electrical energy can be produced from a variety of energy sources and can be transformed into almost any other form of energy.

Grade Level Indicator

  1. Explore that electrical circuits provide a means of transferring electrical energy and electrical energy can be produced from a variety of energy sources.
  2. Explore that without touching them, material that has been electrically charged attracts uncharged material, and may either attract or repel other charged material. This is how a motor works. Without direct contact, a magnet attracts certain materials and either attracts or repels other magnets.
  3. Investigate the different types of renewable energy and design an abstract representation of it. Highlight how that energy is being transformed into energy that humans use.

Essential Questions

  1. What happens to energy when is being use?
  2. What is the relationship between heat and energy?
  3. What types of renewable energy are and how they work?
  4. How does solar energy powers a circuit?
  5. How does a motor works?

Common Misconceptions

  1. Energy can be changed completely from one form to another (no energy losses).
  2. Energy is truly lost in many energy transformations
  3. Earth gets heat from the sun.

Prerequisites

Evidence

Performance Tasks

  1. Create or illustrate an abstract representation of a specific type of renewable energy
  2. Using an LED, motor, battery power and solar power design a working circuit to give movement and light to the symbolic representation of renewable energy

Students Will Know

  1. The fundamental idea of the Law of Energy Conservation
  2. Factual information types of energy and their transformations
  3. Basic information of how a motor works
  4. Parts of a cicuit

Students will Be Able To

  1. Create a basic circuit with a LED, motor, two different power sources and solder their components
  2. Identify different transformations of energy and different types of energy
